Resume Strategies for Technical Grads
There are many difficulties faced by the graduates in technology today and the situation is the same in all industries. Preparing an IT résumé is a big hurdle and a hi-tech professional may not have an experience in technology in the real scenario. This difficulty can be handled well by a full time or a part time employment in technology by a tech grad so that you come out with an experience as you complete college.
If you have to prepare an IT resume and you have no experience, you need to mention the training part. The hiring mangers, when they look into your resume would like to find out whether your skills, education and training match the targeted job.
A young professional when applying for a job of internship faced a problem. She saw that the skills she had earned in college were a little back dated than what the market needed because of the advancement into more modern technology. Therefore this professional mentioned those skills to be achieved as training goals in the accompanying letter sent along with the resume.
Thus she made the resume much easier for the hiring managers to screen because she had mentioned the skills to be achieved on top of the page. She wanted to work on the database technology and not as a programmer. Thus she put an emphasis on the database concerning skills and these were listed on top. So the way she mentioned it put a lesser emphasis on the fact that she was not trained in C and Visual Basic, the modern languages in programming.
Resume books would also advise the new tech grads to mention the course work they had done in school. This gives a fair idea of the academic records and also makes the résumé stand out for the additional qualifications. Project synopsis would help to give some flesh to the resume.
The other section to be concerned with is the Employment History. So concentrate on what is present in your resume than what is not present. You have to look at skills that you have and will be required by your employers. Companies today are more on the lookout for employees with a well-rounded personality. They would not only do technical work but also learn to work as a team. They have to get along with the team in a positive manner. So the communication skills, team spirit and enthusiasm to work properly are added assets in a professional.
The employers are also on the lookout for people with excellent communication qualities, abilities to negotiate and also to work as a team. A person who is used to working in an IT environment with lots of stress and also cater to the company’s needs should put all the elements in the resume. She needs to have a strong feel of business negotiations too.
When writing the Experience category for an IT resume be sure to include the cooperative learning and internship experience too. Organizational operation, project requirements and skills should be mentioned. Thus when you compose the content of the resume, be sure to mention the work done and the skills achieved.
